The history of the 4 personality types, also known as the 4 temperaments starts with Hippocrates twenty-four hundred years ago. He identified the 4 personalities by naming them black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. So what do these fluids have to do with personality types?. Hippocrates recognized these fluids as representing a person’s health. Black bile = Melancholy, Yellow bile = Choleric, Phlegm = Phlegmatic and Blood = Sanguine. Melancholy, Choleric, Phlegmatic and Sanguine are the 4 Personality types of this day and age. Melancholy means that you are very analytic. Choleric means that you want always want to be in charge. Phlegmatic means that you are a nurturer. Sanguine means you just want to have fun. I will go into greater details about the 4 personality types in a moment.
Each personality has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. Each one of us is a combination of all the four personalities, but we all have a dominant personality type and a less dominant personality type. So now I will explain each personality type in detail and go over the strengths and weakness.
Melancholy – also known as an Emerald, Green, Conscientious. The Strength of this personality is: Thinker, Inventor, Planner, Analyzer, Accurate, Organized, Thoughtful, Detailed, Artistic, Philosophical, Perfectionist, Economical, Idealistic, Purposeful. The Weaknesses of this personality is: Introverted, Easily Depressed, Over Cautious, Analysis Paralysis, Laid Back, Skeptical, Pessimistic.
Choleric – also known as an Ruby, Red, Dominance. The Strength of this personality is: Natural Born Leader, Goal Oriented, Achiever, Outgoing, Optimistic, Hard Working, Aggressive, Strong-Willed, Decisive, Problem Solver, Confident, Independent, Succeeding, Risk – Taker, Direct. The Weaknesses of this personality is: Domineering, My Way Or The High Way, Rule Breaker, Compulsive, Controlling, Cold, Tactless, Intolerant, Indifferent, Bossy, Impatient.
Phlegmatic – also known as an Pearl, Yellow, Steadiness. The Strength of this personality is: Care Giver, Stable, Patient, Listener, Peaceful, Tolerant, Easy Going, Calm, Reliable, Loyal, Pleasant, Inoffensive, Nurturing, Sympathetic. The Weaknesses of this personality is: Indecisive, Avoids Rejection, Permissive, Worrier, Shy, Bashful, Nonchalant, Timid, Loner, Fearful, Hesitant, Compromising.
Sanguine – also known as an Topaz, Blue, Influence. The Strength of this personality is: Cheerful, Sincere, Apologetic, Inspirational, Enthusiastic, Creative, Optimistic, Charismatic, Entertaining, Curious, Volunteering, Promoter, Expressive, Outgoing, Extroverted. The Weaknesses of this personality is: Talkative, Forgetful, Poor Listener, Repetitious, Frank, Interrupter, Unpredictable, Haphazard, Unorganized, Nervy, Inconsistent, Messy, Moody, Show-off, Changeable, Scatterbrained.
How To Recruit/Sponsor or Sell To Each Of The 4 Personalities:
Melancholy – You cannot recruit/sponsor or sell a Melancholy personality. They must recruit/sponsor or sell themselves. The more information you give them, the more they can recruit/sponsor or sell themselves on what you are offering. They are the only ones who legitimately mean “ I want to think it over” whenever they tell you this as an area of concern. The best thing that you can do is follow up with them in 48 hours after you flooded them with links, web sites, literature, research material etc., etc. etc.. If they can’t analyze, you can’t finalize (close) what you are offering them.
Choleric – Do not give too much information, especially technical information to this personality when trying to recruit/sponsor or sell them. They only want the facts in lay men’s term. They are impatient and they feel that they are doing you a favor instead of you doing them a favor. They are risk takers and they only want you to show them the money. Sell them the sizzle, not the steak, the benefits and not the facts. If you are trying to recruit/sponsor them, you better be offering them 5 times more income than they are currently making on their job. Challenge them by telling them, that they might not be able to do your business, so they can prove you wrong. Stroke their ego as if your company needs people like them and tell them that they will get to be can be their own boss and they will join you. Good luck in training them, because some will not be that coachable, but they will love to lead (Boss) your team.
Phlegmatic – You can recruit/sponsor or sell a phlegmatic personality
by showing them how much your opportunity or offering is helping other people
reach their goals and dreams. They want to be part of a team. They want to
nurture, take care of and teach people. As long as they get to help people they
will join you or accept what you are trying to offer them. The money is not all
that important to them unless they can make enough in your opportunity to
donate to a charity or a church. They can’t handle rejection but if you give
them team support they will shine in your business. They are easy to sell or
recruit/sponsor because they do not want to hurt your feelings.
Sanguine – The only way to recruit/sponsor or sell a Sanguine is by offering them fun. That is the only thing that is on a Sanguine’s mind 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you want them in your opportunity then you have to talk about trips and company parties and meeting other fun people, especially of the opposite sex. They are the only personality that will get literally get involved with anything emotionally and then satisfy it later with logic. They are also prone to buyer’s remorse. Be prepared to get that “I have been thinking about it” call. Reassure them with fun and excitement and how great it will be if they stay in your opportunity or hold on to your product.
How can you tell who has what personality: By asking questions. Sanguine and Phlegmatic people are very open people. If you ask them about their family or how many children they have, they will tell you without hesitation. Sanguines love to talk, but a Phlegmatic will give you too much information like the age of their children, what school their children attend and when their children’s baby teeth fell out. Melancholy and Choleric people are very self-contained (closed) people. They do not like to tell you about their family. They will tell you that they have one boy and one girl and that is it. Next question. Some Melancholy and Choleric people will even ask you “why do you need that information?”. If they stop you from getting that information, you have narrowed down the personalities to either Melancholy or Choleric. Secondly, Melancholy and Phlegmatic people are indirect. They don’t like to express their feelings all the time until they get to know you, like you and trust you. Thirdly, Choleric and Sanguine people are very direct. They will tell you what is on their mind. If a Sanguine likes you, he/she will tell you. A Choleric will hurt your feelings in a heartbeat, but they don’t mean it, that is just the way they are. So when a Choleric calls you a nut or some other derogatory word to your face, because you are not keeping pace with them, do not take it personal.
In summary, Melancholy personalities are self-contained and indirect, they also talk soft and slow and seldom dress conservatively. Melancholy Careers are engineers, mathematicians, accountants, professors. Choleric personalities are self-contained and direct, they will talk loud and even paced (not to fast or slow). Choleric Careers are Bosses, Military Officials, Coaches, Attorneys, Presidents, CEO. Some Choleric personalities dress fashionably in the latest designer wear. Phlegmatic personalities are indirect and open. Phlegmatic Careers are teacher, nurse, red cross volunteers. Phlegmatics normally dress casually and walk and eat slow. Sanguine personalities are open and direct. Sanguines can’t stop talking. Some Sanguines dress very colorful, loud and will dye their hair. Career choices of Sanguines are entertainers, singers, dancers, sales. Just because a person is a teacher does not make them a Phlegmatic and not all professors are Melancholy. Remember we are a combination of all 4 personality types. Some people do not like the old school approach of prospecting for new leads and recruits. What is the old school approach. Putting together a warm market list of family, friends and co – workers. Using the F.O.R.M and S.T.E.A.M. method. F.O.R.M means asking a prospect about their family, their occupation, their recreation and then leaving them with a message that whatever they do not like about their current situation, you can help them. S.T.E.A.M. means to ask a friend or acquaintance “who do you know who is in sales?, a teacher?, enthusiastic?, ambitious or money motivated?”. You are the hunter and the prospect is the hunted. Is there anything wrong with the old school method? No, it is just that some people do not like the possibility of being rejected by the person that they are F.O.R.M.ing or S.T.E.A.M.ing. In either method, old school or new school, you still have to follow up with the person you attracted or prospected. Attraction marketing can bring you more leads and prospects, because the internet never sleeps, it never gets tired, and it never needs a potty break. The Tools of Attraction Marketing
You need to build an online system, that continually drives traffic to your landing or lead capture pages, that then entices that traffic to give you their name, email address and telephone number for you to follow up with them at a later date. If your brokerage, mlm, home base business or network marketing company creates lead capture pages for their employees or independent contractors then use it. If not, find an online company that provides one for your particular business as long as it is compliant with your particular business. Once you get your lead capture pages created, you will need to use search engine optimization methods to list your lead capture pages high on search engine results after a particular keyword is used. Then you will need to use a good sales letter or ad copy to entice a web site visitor to leave their contact information. The product that you are promoting online is not your company, your products, or your services. The real product is you. People buy you before they buy anything else.
The Follow Up
To have a bunch of leads and no follow up with those leads not only wastes your time but the prospects time. You have to know what to say to those leads in order to get them involved in your company. Again, keep in mind that the product is you. Telling is not selling. Vomiting a whole bunch of information on your lead or prospect does not work. You need to have the right questions to ask those leads that you are qualifying to work with you. It would help to have a prepared script that you use continuously and is working for you. You will also need to know how to overcome objections. What do you say to a prospect when they say “I don’t have the time to get involved with a business right now” or “I want to think it over”. You have to come across on the phone with a position of authority that you have the cookie that does not crumble and that I do not need you, you need me. You can’t lead people if you need people. Your time is valuable and if someone is wasting your time by not answering your questions, then you must have an abundance mentality to disqualify that prospect and go onto the next prospect.
